Facial Enhancement Acupuncture
A specialised Chinese medicine treatment combining constitutional body acupuncture with targeted facial acupuncture, facial cupping and gua sha.
About the treatment
Facial Enhancement Acupuncture is a specialised application of Traditional Chinese Medicine that combines facial acupuncture with constitutional treatment of the body. Rather than treating the face in isolation, treatment considers your skin and facial presentation alongside the wider patterns identified through a full Chinese medicine assessment.
Your first appointment therefore begins with the same comprehensive consultation and diagnostic process used within my general acupuncture practice. Alongside your skin and the areas you would like to address, we’ll discuss your wider health history and any symptoms that may be relevant. Tongue and pulse diagnosis also form part of the assessment.
This information is considered through the diagnostic frameworks of Chinese medicine, drawing on both TCM pattern differentiation and Five Element diagnosis where relevant. These findings inform the constitutional body acupuncture used within the treatment, alongside more targeted needling of the face.
Facial cupping and gua sha are incorporated where appropriate to work more directly with the superficial tissues of the face and complement the acupuncture treatment. Organic hyaluronic acid serum is used during the facial component of the treatment.
Treatment is reviewed as you progress rather than following an identical facial protocol at every appointment. Changes in your skin and facial presentation, your general health and your response between treatments can all inform how subsequent sessions are approached.
Your appointment
Your first Facial Enhancement Acupuncture appointment allows 90 minutes for a full Traditional Chinese Medicine consultation and your first treatment.
We’ll discuss your skin and what you would like to address alongside your general health, medical history and any other symptoms that may be relevant. The consultation can include questions about sleep, digestion, energy, temperature, menstrual and reproductive health, stress and emotional wellbeing, as well as tongue and pulse diagnosis.
A facial-specific assessment also covers your skin, current skincare and relevant previous treatments, including Botox, dermal fillers and other aesthetic procedures.
Your consultation is followed by your first treatment, which may include facial, auricular and body acupuncture points alongside facial cupping and gua sha, selected according to your individual presentation. Relevant diet, lifestyle and skincare recommendations may also be provided.

Follow-up treatments
Once your initial assessment has been completed, subsequent appointments focus on reviewing your progress and providing treatment.
We’ll discuss any changes since your previous appointment and reassess relevant aspects of your Chinese medicine presentation. Treatment can then be adapted accordingly, including facial, auricular and body acupuncture points and the use of facial cupping and gua sha.
Follow-up treatments can be booked individually, or you can choose a course of six if you would like to continue treatment over a series of appointments.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
The needles used for facial acupuncture are very fine. You may feel a brief prick as some needles are inserted and occasionally a dull, tingling or warm sensation while they are retained. Sensation varies between different areas of the face and from person to person. Treatment should remain tolerable, and I can adjust the approach if an area feels particularly sensitive.
-
Minor bruising can occasionally occur with facial acupuncture, even when careful needling technique is used. This is usually small and temporary, but it is worth taking into account if you have an important event approaching.
Please also let me know about any medication, supplements or medical conditions that may affect bleeding or bruising before treatment.

Everyone begins with an initial consultation and treatment. After this, follow-up Facial Enhancement Acupuncture can be booked individually or as a course of six treatments.
There is no requirement to commit to a course at your first appointment. We can discuss the most appropriate approach after your initial assessment and review how you respond as treatment progresses.

Treatment combines body and facial acupuncture, with facial cupping and gua sha incorporated where appropriate. Organic hyaluronic acid serum is used during the facial component of the treatment.
Your first appointment also includes a full Traditional Chinese Medicine consultation and facial-specific assessment. Follow-up appointments include a review of your progress so that treatment can be adjusted as necessary.

Yes, but I recommend leaving at least six weeks between Botox or dermal filler treatment and Facial Enhancement Acupuncture. This allows time for the injectable treatment to settle before acupuncture, facial cupping or gua sha is performed in the area.
Please let me know about any recent or planned injectable or aesthetic treatments when booking.

No. Although both treatments involve fine needles, the techniques and treatment approaches are different.
Facial Enhancement Acupuncture uses individually placed acupuncture needles and forms part of a wider Chinese medicine treatment that includes constitutional body acupuncture. Microneedling uses a specialised device to create controlled micro-injury across the skin and is offered as a separate, targeted skin treatment.

Not sure which treatment is appropriate?
If you're unsure which appointment to book, a free discovery call of up to 15 minutes gives us an opportunity to briefly discuss what you're seeking treatment for and whether my approach is likely to be appropriate.
We can talk through whether a full acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine consultation or one of the more focused treatments would be the most suitable place to start. The call is an informal conversation rather than a clinical consultation — your full assessment takes place at your first appointment.
